One of the keys to understanding Canadian racism, from everything I've seen, is that our racism tends to be subtler than its American counterpart. From the claims of 'civilizing' Indigenous people to the "I can't believe you have a car like that" Ms. Rae describes to the fact that we weren't up front about our segregation as vocal Jim Crow supporters were in the United States (the main difference between Viola Desmond here and Rosa Parks in the United States was that Desmond was in a movie theater instead of a city bus) to the claim that repressing the rights of Francophone Canadians would ensure 'national unity' by ensuring that English dominated everywhere, we just haven't said the quiet parts out loud nearly as much as the Americans have.
