Wab Kinew's becoming Premier of Manitoba is a huge achievement, but he's not actually the first Indigenous provincial Premier. The first one was actually the Metis John Norquay all the way back from 1878 to 1887:

The territories have also had Indigenous Premiers like Stephen Kakfwi (Dene, Northwest Territories) and Paul Okalik (Inuit, Nunavut).

That said, Kinew deserves full credit for running a positive, hopeful campaign, which as you said is a hopeful sign given the dismal, angry tone of so much of politics these days.
